Footwork for Defense
Championships start
with an athletic base
Many coaches will tell you that young players often rely too much on
their sticks when playing defense. The key to good defense is proper
footwork and body positioning. Developing your athletic ability so that
you can make proper approaches, cover the needed space, and make
quick and explosive slides to fill a void is what will set you apart from
the competition.
Athletic ability is the basis for great individual and team defense.
Acceleration and deceleration skills will be key in not allowing the
offense get into prime shooting space. You will need to shuffle, plant,
drop step, and explode at key times to be an effective member of a
solid defensive unit.
Train for Lax will soon be offering a 25 page guide for developing all
these skills. It will contain an introduction to the skills as well as
exercises and drills to hone and sharpen them. Incorporating these
drills and applying these techniques will take your defensive game to
the next level.
